While Apple is a big enough customer to convince Samsung to make the SM951 in a custom form factor, OWC is not. The requirement to use AHCI instead of NVMe limited OWC's choices for SSD controller. Like the Apple originals, the OWC Aura PCIe SSD uses the AHCI protocol Apple so far only supports and uses NVMe on the Retina MacBook that doesn't have a removable SSD. OWC has finally devised a compatible replacement and released it as part of their Aura SSD product line. Transcend has generally used Silicon Motion controllers while OWC has used SandForce controllers, but until now their offerings have been limited to SATA-based SSDs.Īpple migrated their notebook SSDs to PCIe-based interfaces in 2013 and has been using drives supplied by Toshiba, SanDisk, and Samsung. Only a few companies have produced SSDs in Apple-specific form factors, most notably Other World Computing (OWC) and Transcend. This has contributed to keeping the market for third-party upgrades very small. Rather than adopt the mSATA or later M.2 form factor, Apple's SSDs have used custom form factors and pinouts.

I sometimes had problems with my mac waking up.Apple's Retina MacBook Pro and all but the earliest MacBook Air models have relied solely on SSDs for internal storage, as Apple slimmed down the designs to the point that even a 1.8" hard drive was too bulky. Restore your Time machine backup and boot up your system. Go to disk utility to make sure your system recognizes the SSD, and format it (structure APFS, and GUID). Screw the backcover on your Macbook again and when powering on Press command+option+R to boot up in internet recovery mode. Unfortunately I do not have pictures from this step on, since I already had MacOS on the SSD since I made this tutorial when replacing the old style adapter.

Do not pull it up!Īnd install the new SSD with adapter in your Macbook, and use the new screw you get with the Sintech adapter. Remove the little torx screw from the original SSD, and pull it back. If you have some kind of plastic spudger I would recommend to release the battery connector for safety. If you remove the back cover you will see the mainboard and the battery. Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver to unscrew the back-cover of your Macbook Pro, make sure to watch the 2 screws that are close to the Macbook Pro inscription on your back cover, they are an other size. Buy a Sintech adapter, I highly recommend the following adapter: Buy a NVME SSD, I bought a 250GB Samsung Evo 960

If you are on one of the previous versions, you need an AHCI drive and things will be more complicated, so please before buying an NVME SSD, upgrade to High Sierra.

When your Macbook Pro already has Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra, this will work. The 8GB of RAM is something I need to live with, but I found a way to upgrade the SSD much cheaper than buying an OWC or OEM one. I did not like the fact that it has only 8 GB ram, that’s also soldered on the motherboard, and I thought 128gb of disk space won’t be enough.īut I like the screen, the trackpad and the battery+overall build quality. An business laptop from 3 or 4 years old that meets the build quality I want I am not a real apple fanboy, but when I wanted a smaller laptop I had a few choices.ġ.
